Pain Management Programmes

A Module has been planned for chronic non-malignant pain services within the ABM Health Board, (swansea, neath port talbot, bridgend inclusive). This will be based on best practice within the UK. The module will deliver a tiered system of care incorporating a comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment by a Chronic Pain Assessment Team (CPAT) consisting of a Consultant/GPwSI, Pain Nurse Specialist, Physiotherapist and Physchology where required. CPAT will be delivered from venues across all 3 localities to ensure local access for patients.

Outcome of the assessment, patients can be referred for cognitive behavioural therapy based exercise and education Pain Management Programmes being delivered within the local community across ABM by a multidisciplinary team (Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Specialist Pain Nurse and Psychologist). Patients will be offered the option of undertaking a 10 or 4 weekly programme according to their needs.

As part of the module a specialist acute pain clinic is factored in to ensure more complex acute services are available where appropriate for patients.

These dedicated clinics will be delivered across Morriston, Neath Port Talbot and Princess of Wales Hospitals by a small team of Clinical Nurse Specialists, Consultant Anaesthetists and Consultant Rehabilitation Medicine.

This system is due to be fully operational by September 2011.

This module is just what we need as patients with Fibromyalgia, and in the past patients had to travel a considerable way to get access pain management.

Hopefully more of these modules will be created throughout Wales.
